Officer Brett Boller, age 22, of Hauppauge, was shot while responding to a report of a fight on an MTA bus in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens on Wednesday, April 5, according to police.

The bus driver had flagged officers down after two men got into an altercation over a seat, police said. When officers approached, the suspect fled the bus through its front door.

Officer Boller eventually caught up to the suspect near Jamaica Avenue and 161st Street, where the man fired a single shot, striking Boller in his right hip, police said.

Boller later underwent surgery and is expected to recover.

Police said the suspect fled into a nearby parking garage, where he ditched a black mask, jacket, and orange sweatshirt. Surveillance video shows that the suspect later left the garage.

He was last seen on 161st Street and Hillside Avenue.

On Thursday, April 6, NYPD released additional photos of the suspect and said a $10,000 reward was being offered for information leading to an arrest.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Boller joined the NYPD in July of 2022 and was assigned to his current command in January.

Congressman Nick LaLota, whose 1st District covers eastern Long Island, recognized Boller in a post on Twitter hours after the shooting.

"We’re lucky to have brave cops willing to put themselves between us and danger everyday."
